Dolores Gomez, MD

Program Director

Dolores Gomez, MD is originally from Dell City, Texas (population 600) and moved to Las Cruces in 1986. She received her Bachelor of Science from New Mexico State University and received her MD from the University of New Mexico. She returned to Las Cruces and completed her residency in Family Medicine and is an alumnus of the Southern NM Family Medicine Residency, Class of 2001. Dr. Gomez left Las Cruces after residency and completed a fellowship in Advanced Hospital Training for Family Physicians at Maricopa Medical Center in Phoenix, Arizona, as well as a Faculty Development fellowship through the University of Arizona. After completion of the fellowships, she was appointed faculty of the Advanced Hospital Training fellowship. She remained as faculty for the next five years until returning to Las Cruces to rejoin the residency as faculty in January 2009. Dr. Gomez has a strong interest in obstetrics, including surgical and high-risk OB. She also loves sports medicine and is a die-hard NMSU Aggie and Arizona Diamondback fan. “Training Family Medicine residents to be successful full-spectrum physicians is a direct reflection on the strength of the program and a direct reflection on our ability to educate residents”.

Danielle Fitzsimmons-Pattison, MD

Associate Program Director

Dr. Pattison is a part of the family medicine clinical faculty at the Southern New Mexico Family Medicine Residency Program (SNMFMRP) in Las Cruces, New Mexico. She received her MD from the University of New Mexico and completed her FM residency at SNMFMRP.  She joined the faculty and then completed a fellowship in Global Health and Refugee Care at the Family Health Center of Worcester and the University of Massachusetts Medical Center. Following her fellowship, she resumed her role as faculty at SNMFMRP.

Dr. Pattison's professional focus includes care of border communities including those living in the area and traveling through.   She also promotes an understanding of health advocacy to help Family Doctors utilize their skills to help the patients they care for.  Her research efforts have centered on healthcare in the border region and resident education tailored to address the unique needs of these areas. She emphasizes a comprehensive approach to healthcare that considers social determinants and focuses on the needs of the community.

Amanda Provencio, MD

Associate Program Director

Amanda Provencio, MD, was born and raised in Las Cruces, New Mexico where she graduated from Mayfield Highschool, Go Trojans! She obtained her Bachelor of Science from the University of Oklahoma and attended Medical School at the University of New Mexico School of Medicine. Dr. Provencio graduated medical school with honors, being inducted to Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society and was selected at the recipient of the Gold-Headed Cane Award for her graduating class. Being passionate about serving the community she grew up in, Dr. Provencio returned home to complete her training here at the Southern New Mexico Family Medicine Residency program. Dr. Provencio is interested in full spectrum family medicine and is passionate about women’s and children’s health. She also enjoys adolescent medicine and preventative care. Working to understand the socioeconomic impacts of health on her patients, Dr. Provencio strives to improve their health, wellbeing, and overall success.

Mary Alice Scott, Ph.D

Medical Anthropologist

Dr. Scott is associate professor of anthropology and graduate faculty in the integrated behavioral health program at New Mexico State University. She is also adjunct research faculty at the Southern New Mexico Family Medicine Residency Program. She received her B.A. in Women’s Studies from Duke University and her M.A. and Ph.D. in anthropology from the University of Kentucky. Her research program is part of an academic-community collaboration with a team of NMSU students and faculty and the residency program. The program includes explorations of the culture of medicine and medical education as well as development of curricula and tools to improve training in health equity in health care professions. The team’s current project is a mixed-methods evaluation of a social determinants of health screening tool used in a primary care clinic in the U.S.-Mexico border region. Her research has been funded by the National Science Foundation, Fulbright, National Cancer Institute, the New Mexico State University College of Arts & Sciences, the Southwest and Border Cultures Institute, and the Loomis Foundation. Her work has been published in Collaborative Anthropologies, Journal of Interprofessional Care, and Qualitative Health Research among other journals.

Marcos Olivas

Program Coordinator

Born and raised in Embudo, New Mexico; a small town in Northern New Mexico. He moved to Las Cruces in 2008 after graduating from Los Alamos High School to pursue his degree in Criminal Justice with a concentration in Security Technolgy & Intelligence. Most of his healthcare experience has been within the geriatric community.  He started off working at the age of 14 in Los Alamos at Aspen Ridge Lodge Retirement Community, then continued working while going through high school at Los Alamos National Bank as their assistant auditor.  Once he completed high school, he continued his education at NMSU and worked at Good Samaritan Society with multiple roles within his 10 years there. He then found his home at Memorial Medical Center and will be continuing his education in Healthcare Administration.  In his free time, he enjoys doing photography and traveling.

Donna Madrid, C-TAGME

Donna Madrid is a Las Cruces native with extensive administrative experience in community agencies, government offices, and health care organizations. She has worked with the Robyn Institute on Violence, the US Department of Corrections, Medico-Psychological Services, and Memorial Medical Center. She has been the family medicine residency program coordinator since December 2007 and is TAGME certified. Her areas of expertise include program management, development and evaluation; ACGME accreditation; and resident recruitment. In her free time, she enjoys spending time with her family.

Patrick Leung, Pharm.D., BCPS, PhC

Pharmacy Residency Program Director

Patrick Leung, Pharm.D, is the Manager of Pharmacy Clinical Services at Memorial Medical Center (MMC) and a faculty at Southern New Mexico Family Medicine Residency since 2002. He is also a credentialed pharmacist clinician at MMC Anticoagulation Management Service. He works collaboratively with the family medicine team to manage inpatient and outpatient medication therapy. He rounds daily with a multi-disciplinary team at the Intensive Care Unit. He is the pharmacy leader of the MMC Antimicrobial Stewardship team. He is the Co-Chair of the Clinical Competency Committee at Family Medicine Residency. Besides his teaching responsibilities at Family Medicine Residency, Dr. Leung is the MMC Pharmacy Residency Program Director and a preceptor for the University of New Mexico College of Pharmacy and Burrell College of Osteopathic Medicine. Dr. Leung is a Board Certified Pharmacotherapy Specialist. He received his Bachelor of Pharmacy and Doctor of Pharmacy degrees from Washington State University. Some of his practice interests are infectious diseases, cardiovascular diseases, anticoagulation, and diabetes.

Davena Norris, Pharm.D., DCPS, PhC

Pharmacy Residency Coordinator

Davena Norris is a Clinical Pharmacist at Memorial Medical Center (MMC) in Las Cruces, New Mexico. Upon graduating from the University of New Mexico College of Pharmacy in 2012, she completed a PGY1 pharmacy residency at the Southern Arizona VA Healthcare System (SAVAHCS) in Tucson. In her current position at MMC, Dr. Norris works collaboratively with family medicine residents and faculty to manage medication therapy in both inpatient and ambulatory settings. A few of her greatest practice interests include diabetes management and prevention, the care of older adults, and infectious disease. She has many teaching roles, including serving as a faculty member for the Southern NM Family Medicine Residency Program (SNFMRP), Program Coordinator for the MMC PGY1 Pharmacy Residency Program, and a preceptor for the UNM College of Pharmacy.

John andazola, MD

Faculty & DIO

John Andazola, MD, FAAFP was born and raised in Las Cruces, New Mexico where he attended New Mexico State University. He received his MD from the University of New Mexico School of Medicine in 1997, and completed residency at the Southern New Mexico Family Medicine Residency program in 2000. Dr Andazola went on to complete a fellowship in Advanced Hospital Training for Family Physicians in Phoenix AZ, and a Faculty Development Fellowship at the University of Arizona from 2001-2003. After completion of the fellowships Dr. Andazola joined the fellowship faculty and later became director of the fellowship. Dr. Andazola moved back to Las Cruces in January of 2009 and became program director in May of 2009. He is very happy to be back home! Dr. Andazola’s interests are in medical education, hospital medicine, OB and border health. He is committed to his community and is committed to producing well rounded Family Physicians for southern New Mexico.

Ivan de la Rosa, Ph.D., LMSW

Iván A. de la Rosa, Ph.D., LMSW, is an Associate Professor in the School of Social Work at New Mexico State University and has a joint research faculty appointment with the Southern New Mexico Family Medicine Residency program at Memorial Medical Center in Las Cruces. Dr. de la Rosa received his Ph.D. in Social Work and Sociology from the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor in 1998. His practice background is in crisis intervention counseling among immigrants in New York City, and he is an experienced program evaluator in the areas of maternal and child health. He currently serves as the program evaluator for the Ysleta del Sur Pueblo in El Paso, TX, and PRN social worker at Memorial Medical Center in Las Cruces. Dr. de la Rosa’s research focus is violence and trauma and is particularly interested in identifying risk and protective factors, especially those from US/Mexico borderland communities. He is also involved in several initiates focused on interprofessional behavioral health. He is the Co-PI on a HRSA funded integrated behavioral health training project and NIH funded social determinant of health study. He has published numerous articles in peer-reviewed journals, emphasizing family resilience, substance abuse, violence, and trauma.

Donna Winslow, PhD

Behavioral Health

Donna Winslow, PhD, is a psychologist prescriber with the Family Medicine Center of Memorial Medical Center of Las Cruces, NM.  She was born and raised in the Midwest.  She earned a BA in Psychology from the University of Kansas, an MA in Marriage and Family Therapy from Hardin-Simmons University, an MS and PhD in Clinical Psychology from University of Wyoming, and MS in Clinical Psychopharmacology from NMSU.  She completed an internship in clinical psychology at the Charleston Area Medical Center at the WVU School of Medicine in Charleston WV.  Dr. Winslow has extensive experience working in rural and underserved areas that include Wyoming, West Virginia, western North Carolina, and the Cherokee Indian Reservation.  Prior to joining the Family Medicine Center, she worked as a psychologist with the El Paso VA Health Care Center in El Paso, Texas.  Dr. Winslow is committed to providing community–based integrated behavioral healthcare to patients across the developmental span.

Joanna Rachelson, MD

Joanna Rachelson was born and raised in beautiful Taos, New Mexico. After high school she attended the University of San Francisco and received her BA in Comparative Literature with a minor in Sociology. She decided to pursue a career in medicine after doing various volunteer work. She received her MD from American University of Antigua, and through clinical rotations she found a joy and passion for family medicine. She attended residency here at the Southern New Mexico Family Medicine Residency Program. She is very passionate about preventative care, nutrition and fitness and loves working with patients to find balance and joy in developing a heathy lifestyle.
